Over heard at the recent US Amateur East.

Older player to a youngster who was asking for a draw, "Sorry, its too early."
(10 moves later at the same board)
Youngter to the older player who is now the one asking for draw. "Sorry its too late."

New Jersey / Viking Deluxe Easy Button Contest (VDEB)

    Explanation of the NJ/VDEB Contest:
    1. In all Viking events $1 is put into a special fund for each paying participant. As of
May 31, 2008, this fund balance is $203.00.
    2. On December 27, 2008 (our last 2008 event) this fund will be awarded to the four NJ player and out of state Viking Club Members (Basically everyone) who score the most points in Viking events.
    3. The current plan (which may change)is to award equal prizes in four categories. They are Open, Under 1900, Under 1500 and Under 1100. In addition, the winners will receive a free entry in all 2009 Viking Quads or two other Viking events, such as a Viking Grand Prix.
    4. The only two requirements to participate are you must be from NJ or be a Viking Club Member, AND you must press the "easy button" &/or say "That was easy!" when you enter a Viking Event. You must never dishonor the beloved easy button. Failure and you are excomunicated from the contest.
    5. Standings are posted on this page of entryfeesrus.com.
    6. No sandbagging. Cash prize will NOT be split!! The tie-break will be Rock-Paper-Scissors one-shot playoff.
    7. One might ask, How can I be a Viking? Can I ever be an exalted Norseman? Will I ever be part of the Grand Viking Chess Club? Is there hope for me? Well Johnny, TODAY IS YOUR LUCKY DAY!
  • The rules are simple:
  • 7a. First, A Viking must naturally possess the very highest personal character traits. You must be honorable and righteous in all ways and have the virtues of honesty and Fidelity.
  • 7b. Naturally, It is well known that New Jersey players (ranked below 2200) have these high qualities. They are Vikings automatically from birth.
  • 7c. Higher rated NJ players such as Masters and Experts (especially Westfield and Dumont CC types) ..well they does struggle a bit with it, but we do include them anyway. Why? Because... (well because.. its a Jersey thing) and they are after all from Jersey.
  • 7d. On the other hand, The poor "Out of Staters" are also allowed to be Vikings. "My goodness why?" you might ask. This is because we are noble Vikings, merciful and kind. We pity those poor wretches. No matter if they climbed out of a mine in the poor Anthracite Belt or vintured out of the core of that wormy Big Apple.
  • It is sort of like the way one feeds the pitiful little pidgins begging in the park. * Note: Highest 2008 rating is listed.

    * Top Tie-Breaks

    My Most Memorable Memorial Day!
By Hunan Russell (as Edited by Ken Thompson), Forty-three years ago I played in my first U.S. Amateur Championship. The 1965 edition was a seven-round event held in the Henry Hudson Hotel in New York City. I recall Sammy Reshevsky kibitzing and helping with adjudications. Twenty-three years later I played in my second U.S. Amateur in Stamford, Connecticut. When I realized my schedule would allow me to play in the 2008 U.S. Amateur East, I decided to enter. The six-round Swiss is played in three sections. In round one, after the opening, I found a nice exchange sacrifice that left me with good play. Although I likely had a winning advantage, my opponent blundered his Queen. I won my second game after I created an outside passed pawn ending. Sunday morning's third round game against the veteran Rutar Vinko was a reverse Benko gambit which I won after a long struggle. Then I played two draws. The round five against the young girl, Anna Matlin, was of particular note. She has made a name for herself in scholastic chess and certainly has a bright future. I generated some pressure, but after five hours of play, she was able draw the game. With one round remaining, there was a three-way tie for first place at 4-1. The players were, Anna Matlin, Carlos Avalos, my last round opponent, and I. Anna played black in her game and was subjected to pressure, but held on for a draw. Now the winner of my game with Avalos would finish a clear first. After an irregular opening, I developed good play and finally broke through his position with a winning advantage. However, nothing is easy, especially when I am at the chess board. We traded blunders in mutually severe time pressure. When the smoke had cleared, I had a simple win. I was now the U.S. Amateur East Champion. My thanks to that great TD, whose name I could never forget. That is Ken Thomas (not Thompson) and his great staff of Aaron Keides (not Nimzowitch) and Noreen Davisson (just Davisson if you please) for running a fine tournament. They are clearly the best TD team in the business. They are the Cream del a Cream of Chess TD's. Ed. Who knows, maybe I'll play again in another 20 years.
